Nymphaea caerulea vs Nelumbo nucifera: blue lotus vs sacred lotus
Two very different plants share the name lotus. Here is how to tell them apart, and why it matters when you buy.
Two plants, one confusing name
The word lotus is used loosely. Blue lotus, also called blue water lily or Egyptian blue lotus, is Nymphaea caerulea. Sacred lotus is Nelumbo nucifera. They look different, grow differently and belong to different plant families, so a seller who only writes lotus on a label is not telling you which one is in the bag.
Key differences
- Family. Nymphaea is a water lily. Nelumbo belongs to its own family.
- Flower. Blue lotus has blue-violet petals with a golden centre. Sacred lotus is usually pink or white and larger.
- Leaves. Water lily pads float on the surface and have a notch. Sacred lotus leaves stand above the water and are round.
- Where it grows. Blue lotus is native to Egypt and eastern and southern Africa. Sacred lotus is widely grown across Asia.
Why buyers should care
If you pay for blue lotus and receive another plant, you have lost money and your customers may notice. Always ask for the full botanical name, the country of origin and a lab certificate that confirms identity. Our bulk buying guide and quality page explain how.
